Exploratory process on the future of the medical devices sector
In 2009 the ESR has been invited to participate in the exploratory process on the
future of the medical devices sector, initiated by the Energy and Transport Directorate-General. The medical devices industry is a key sector for healthcare.
The objective of this process was to gather an overview of existing public health and industrial challenges, to identify current dynamics of the industry and highlight key topics of interest at the European level which has resulted in a set of suggested themes of potential further reflection adopted by the members of the exploratory process.
The process was structured around three "Working Streams":
Work Stream 1: Future challenges for public health and medical technologies developments
Work Stream 2: Balance between the patients' needs and financial sustainability
Work Stream 3: Competitiveness and innovation of the medical devices industry
After several meetings taking place in autumn 2009 and January 2010 a
final report outlining the results of the process was published.
