The Telemedicine challenge in Europe - EC report
A new report "The Telemedicine challenge in Europe" was published by the European Commission. The aim of this special edition of "The European Files" is to help take stock of the development of telemedicine, in all its diverse forms, and in a range of different environments. It is a collection of accounts and analyses by political and industrial decision-makers, patients and professional healthcare representatives, who seem to be best-placed to communicate messages that are both brief and easily understandable to all audiences.

Commission addresses key issues in nuclear medicine, radiology and radiotherapy
The Commission adopted today a Communication to the European Parliament and to the Council on medical applications of ionizing radiation1. It proposes a way forward to resolve the urgent issue of shortage of supply of radioisotopes for nuclear medicine. The Communication also identifies key issues to improve radiation protection of patients and medical staff, to avoid a rise in population exposure associated with the technological advances in X-ray computed tomography imaging (CT) and an increase of accidental or unintended exposures in radiotherapy. This Communication was jointly proposed by Günther Oettinger, Commissioner responsible for Energy, and by John Dalli, Commissioner responsible for Health and Consumer Policy.

Ministerial Conference: Investing in the health professionals of tomorrow in Europe

National measures are often insufficient to deal with the changing and growing demand. Council agrees on new rules for patients' rights in cross-border healthcare
The Council in charge of Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs (EPSCO) today agreed on a draft directive concerning the application of patients' rights in cross-border healthcare, on the basis of a compromise proposal of the Spanish presidency.

The Alliance for MRI aims to safeguard the future use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in Europe through an EU-wide exemption for the medical use of MRI and related research from any exposure limit values set in the Physical Agents 2004/40/EC (EMF) Directive.
This petition will be sent to European institutions, national governments, parliaments and other decision-making bodies to enhance the profile of the Alliance for MRI and demonstrate the significance of this issue.
