European Society of Radiology increases promotion of hybrid imaging
Thursday, February 23, 2017 (Vienna) – In 2017, the European Society of Radiology (ESR) will further focus its educational and promotional efforts on the hot topic of hybrid imaging. An extended plan of action is already in place, in close cooperation with the European Society for Hybrid Medical Imaging (ESHI).
At the upcoming ECR 2017, a total of 14 sessions will update congress delegates about hybrid imaging and its clinical application, including lectures on scientific, educational and professional issues alike (more information can be found in the interactive programme planner within the ECR online portal here).
In order to continue the promotion of hybrid imaging during 2017, a number of activities has been planned together with the ESHI, focusing mainly on education. In September 2016, the first ESOR Asklepios Course on Hybrid Imaging in Oncology took place in Vienna, Austria, organised by the European School of Radiology (ESOR) together with the ESHI. Fully booked with 100 participants from 32 countries, the course was a huge success. Due to the strong demand, ESOR and ESHI, both ESR initiatives, will hold another ESOR-ESHI ASKLEPIOS Course: Introduction to Hybrid Imaging in Oncology from August 31 to September 1, 2017, in Vienna. Additionally, in the latter part of 2017, the ESHI educational programme will be extended to include an advanced course on hybrid imaging.
“I am pleased that we are drawing more attention to hybrid imaging; it can contribute immensely to other fields, and we can therefore ensure added benefits for our patients, for example in oncology. Promotion of, and education in hybrid imaging for radiologists is thus of utmost importance,” emphasised Prof. Dr. Katrine Riklund from Umeå, Sweden, Chair of the ESR Board of Directors and ESHI President.
Later this year, an ESOR course for EDiR on hybrid imaging will be held in the ESR Learning Centre in Vienna. This foundation course is designed to prepare prospective candidates for the European Diploma in Radiology (EDiR). Board-certified radiologists wanting to update their knowledge are also welcome.
ESHI has developed a series of hybrid imaging educational webinars, free of charge. Prominent experts in the field of hybrid imaging will share their knowledge about various modalities and subspecialties related to the fusion of nuclear medicine and radiology as well as molecular imaging. The first webinar on hybrid imaging basics will take place on February 22, 2017, and eight others will follow over the course of 2017. Information on all webinars is available on the ESHI website.
Furthermore, a European Diploma in Hybrid Imaging is in the works. The ESR, ESHI and the European Board of Radiology (EBR) are working in close cooperation to establish a diploma focusing on hybrid imaging as a radiologic subspecialisation, and in parallel, a subspecialised curriculum is currently being defined. The examination will be open to radiologists and radiology residents in their fifth year of training.
