July 2018

The European Society of Radiology (ESR) is pleased to announce that preparations for ESR meets Africa are already in full swing ahead of the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2019. The event shall see a series of speakers from across the African continent come together to bring congress attendees an exciting and unique session.

The session, which shall be held on Thursday, February 28, 2019, will cover a wide range of topics delivered by an array of healthcare professionals, and will also include a panel discussion on the reality and dreams of African radiology. The programme will be topped-off with a healthy dose of live music in a thrilling display of the continent’s vibrant and diverse culture.

Next year, the ESR is looking to invite more African radiologists, radiographers and students to the congress than ever before and will therefore be offering assistance to many who cannot afford the costs associated with Europe’s largest radiological meeting through its support programmes ´Invest in the Youth´ and ´Shape your Skills´. Furthermore, the society is hoping to receive a record number of abstract submissions from the continent this year.

ESR President, Prof. Lorenzo Derchi, expressed his excitement at seeing more Africans at the congress, stating, ‘we believe that this invitation will be a chance to increase our knowledge about radiology throughout the whole continent and an opportunity to meet colleagues from countries with which we are still unacquainted’. Such countries particularly include those in the Sub-Saharan region, with whom the ESR will further strengthen ties over the coming months.

As well as their collaboration at ECR, African radiological societies and the ESR are also focussed on increasing their long-term cooperation. The societies are working hard to facilitate the sharing of radiological knowledge and practice with each other in a bid to improve the delivery of radiological healthcare throughout the African continent.

As part of this initiative, the ESR is currently encouraging as many African radiologists as possible to benefit from its services by signing up for free ESR corresponding membership. Furthermore, the society is increasing its own presence in Africa this year, by attending many national congresses on the continent. The goal of these efforts is to bring African and European radiology into a mutually-beneficial and long-lasting partnership, paving the way for improved patient care on both continents.

Alongside Africa, the ESR will also host Pakistan and Italy as ‘meets’ countries at ECR 2019 in what promises to be one of the most diverse and multicultural congresses to date.

Abstract submission for ECR 2019 is already open. Registration for the congress is open from September 3.
