September 2018

Following a productive meeting in July between the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), the two societies have stepped up efforts to support radiographers together through a variety of different initiatives.

The ESR is currently working with the ASRT to highlight the benefits that ESR membership, which is free for ASRT members, can bring to radiologic technologists in North America. As Professionals of Allied Sciences members, such benefits include a special reduced fee of only € 99 to attend the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2019 as well as free access to the ESR’s three journals. Additionally, ESR membership provides the opportunity to apply for the ESR’s unique support initiative, Shape your Skills, which offers radiographers free registration to ECR and an accommodation voucher when they submit an abstract for the congress.  The ESR and ASRT are in agreement that these perks can be very beneficial to American radiological technologists and both societies will be using a variety of communication platforms in the coming months to promote this.

The ASRT has also committed to supporting a number of American radiographers attending the European Congress of Radiology which is also recognised as the official scientific meeting in medical imaging for radiographers by both the ESR and the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS). Through its special travel grant programme, the ASRT will fund 4 of its members to travel to the congress in 2019 with all expenses paid, to experience the comprehensive and perfectly-tailored programme for radiographers that the congress has come to be known for. This generous offer will help to promote ECR amongst American radiologic technologists and highlight the value it can bring to these professionals.

The ASRT has an impressive reputation within the North American medical community with over 150,000 members. The ESR is therefore very pleased to be working more closely with them. Our society hopes that the collaboration will mark the beginning of a closer friendship with the ASRT, ultimately serving to benefit all radiographers from both North America and Europe for the long-term.
