In recognition of his pivotal role in the development of radiology, in particular ultrasound, in Africa and beyond, Professor Michael G. Kawooya from Kampala, Uganda, will receive ESR Honorary Membership at ECR 2019.

Professor Michael G. Kawooya is professor emeritus in the Department of Radiology at the School of Medicine, Makerere University, and College of Health Sciences in Kampala, Uganda. He is director of ECUREI, an ultrasound-training institute in Kampala that is affiliated to the JUREI institute in the United States of America. Additionally, he is director of the Centre of Excellence of the World Federation in Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) in Kampala and chairman of the Mengo Hospital Research and Ethics Committee, also based in Kampala.
In 1988, Prof. Kawooya received his masters’ degree in medicine in radiology from Makerere University, where he completed his PhD ten years later. He also did a fellowship in radiology at Ebert Karls Universitaet in Tübingen, Germany, from 1989 to 1991, and a fellowship in ultrasound at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, U.S., in 2001.
Prof. Kawooya’s area of research is ultrasound and he has tackled every aspect of its practice. He has published over 55 articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as five chapters in books on different topics, including imaging of tropical diseases.

Prof. Kawooya has served in key roles for prestigious societies, notably as secretary general of the African Society of Radiology (ASR) from 2008 to 2017 and as a member of the WFUMB administrative council from 2009 to 2011. He is a founding member and past president of the Uganda Society for the Advancement of Radiology and Imaging (USOFARI). Prof. Kawooya initiated the creation of the Pan African Congress of Radiology and Imaging (PACORI), over which he presided in 2005–2007. He also served as vice president of the Mediterranean and African Society for Ultrasound (MASU) from 2002 to 2008 and is a founding member of AFROSAFE.rad, Africa’s continental campaign for radiation safety that kicked off in February 2015 in Nairobi, Kenya.
Prof. Kawooya is associate editor of African Health Sciences, a journal of Makerere University Faculty of Medicine, and sits on the editorial board of Ultrasound, a journal of the British Ultrasound Society.
He holds membership in various radiological societies in Uganda, as well as the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). He has received many distinctions for his work, including the Mulago Hospital and Complex Certificate of Merit and Innovativeness in 2007, the Association of Radiologists of Uganda Special Award in 2014, the PACORI Distinguished Service Award in 2013 and honorary fellowship of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine in March 2015.
At ECR 2019, Professor Michael G. Kawooya will be presented with Honorary Membership of the European Society of Radiology.
