In recognition of her amazing accomplishments in the fields of head and neck radiology, education and leadership, Professor Vijay M. Rao from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, will receive ESR Honorary Membership at ECR 2019.
Vijay M. Rao, MD, FACR is the David C Levin Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiology at Thomas Jefferson University. She is also senior vice-president of Enterprise Radiology, Jefferson Health, and the immediate past president of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
Prof. Rao graduated from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, India’s premier medical school, in New Delhi in 1973. She completed her radiology residency in 1978 at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and has remained on the faculty ever since. During her time on the faculty, she served as residency programme director, as well as vice chair for education and co-director of the neuroradiology/ENT division. In 2002 she was named chair of Jefferson’s Department of Radiology, becoming the first woman chair of a clinical department in Jefferson’s history. In 2016, Prof. Rao was named senior vice president of Enterprise Radiology at Jefferson Health.
Prof. Rao is one of the leading experts in head and neck imaging.
She is also widely recognised in health services research in radiology. Prof. Rao has published over 220 peer-reviewed articles and given over 250 presentations at national and international radiology meetings, including invited talks and several named lectures. She has also held many editorial positions for a number of radiology journals.
Prof. Rao is past president of the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology, past president of the Association of Program Directors in Radiology and past president of the American Association of Women Radiologists. She has served on the RSNA Board and currently serves on the RSNA Research and Education Foundation Board as well as the Academy of Radiology Board. Prof. Rao has also served on the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital System Board since 2012.
Prof. Rao has received numerous awards for her work. In 2005, she was honoured by the Philadelphia Business Journal as one of 25 Women of Distinction throughout the region. A year later, she received the Achievement Award from the Association of Programme Directors for her outstanding contributions to radiology education nationally. In 2010 she received the Distinguished Radiologist Award from the American Association of Radiologists of Indian Origin. She also received the gold medal from the Association of University Radiologists, the Marie Curie award from the American Association for Women Radiologists, honorary membership of the Israel Radiological Society and the gold medal from the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology for her outstanding contributions to international radiology. In 2018, Prof. Rao received the medal of honour and honorary membership of the French Society of Radiology.
At ECR 2019, Professor Vijay M. Rao will be presented with Honorary Membership of the European Society of Radiology.
