In recognition of his achievements and long-time commitment to European radiology, Professor Luis Donoso-Bach from Barcelona, Spain, will be awarded the ESR Gold Medal at ECR 2019.
Prof. Luis Donoso-Bach was appointed chairman of the Radiology Department of the UDIAT Diagnostic Centre in 1992, becoming its executive director in 1998. Since 2006, he has been chairman of the diagnostic imaging department at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and professor of radiology at the University of Barcelona.
He received his medical degree from the School of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1981 and completed his residency in radiology at the Hospital Sant Pau in Barcelona. In addition, he earned a PhD in medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1992.
Prof. Donoso-Bach has been involved in many aspects of research. Early in his career, his activity focused on abdominal imaging, especially on liver disease. Later on, his attention shifted to digital imaging and the development and implementation of IT in diagnostic radiology. Under his leadership, a large R&D team was built at UDIAT, leading to several patents and products that are now widely used all over Spain.
Prof. Donoso-Bach has served as vice-president of the Spanish Society for Diagnostic Radiology (SERAM) from 1998 to 2002 and as its president from 2002 to 2006. He was also president of the Spanish Foundation of Radiology from 2008 to 2016.
Since 2000, he has served the European Society of Radiology (ESR) in various capacities, including as president in 2015–2016. Recently, Prof. Donoso-Bach was nominated president-elect of the International Society of Strategic Studies in Radiology (IS3R) and president of the International Society of Radiology, after acting as its secretary general from 2012 to 2014.
Prof. Donoso-Bach has received numerous honours for his contributions to radiology, including the gold medals of the Spanish Society of Radiology and the Interamerican College of Radiology, as well as honorary memberships in the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the Argentinean Society of Radiology, the Italian Society of Radiology, the French Society of Radiology, the German Society of Radiology and the Mexican Society of Radiology, among others. He has also received honorary fellowship of the American College of Radiology and RSNA honorary membership.
Prof. Donoso-Bach has given numerous lectures at prestigious universities, congresses, and courses, and has published over 90 articles and seven book chapters.
At ECR 2019, Professor Luis Donoso-Bach will be presented with the Gold Medal of the European Society of Radiology.
