Professor Regina Beets-Tan from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, will present the Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen Honorary Lecture titled ‘Oncologic imaging: a new beginning has just begun’ at ECR 2019.
Professor Regina Beets-Tan chairs the Department of Radiology at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam. She is full professor of radiology at the University of Maastricht and adjunct professor of abdominal and oncological radiology at the University of Southern Denmark.
She obtained her MD, cum laude, at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Her PhD thesis on rectal cancer MR imaging, which she obtained at the University of Maastricht, was awarded the 2001 Best Thesis Prize.
Prof. Beets-Tan’s main clinical interest has been abdominal and oncological imaging. She leads research in cancer imaging in the Netherlands Cancer Institute, focusing on the validation of multi parametric and artificial intelligence imaging technology as a guidance for interventional, surgical and radiation treatment, and as a biomarker for treatment efficacy in cancer. Her own research track record is in rectal cancer imaging for better treatment outcome, for which she collaborates with multidisciplinary expert teams worldwide, including the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she was affiliated in 2008.

Prof. Beets-Tan is deeply committed to radiological societies. She is a member of the ESR Executive Council, the current president of the European Society of Oncologic Imaging (ESOI) and the president elect of the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR). In the ESR council, she chairs the ESR Publications Committee. She has also served in numerous other ESR committees and is part of the programme planning committee of the European School of Radiology (ESOR).
Prof. Beets-Tan is involved with several strategic organs of clinical societies and believes that close cooperation between the radiological and clinical societies will work synergistically to the benefit of the patient. She represents the ESR on the board of the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO), aiming to strengthen the voice and visibility of radiology within European cancer and patient organisations.
During her ESOI presidency she has reached bilateral agreements with the radiological and the clinical surgical (ESSO), medical (ESMO), radiation oncology (ESTRO) and digestive (ESDO) oncological societies. As an ESGAR board member, she has represented the society on strategic and educational committees of United European Gastroenterology, a federation of gastrointestinal clinical societies.
As recognition for her work, she has been awarded the honorary memberships of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) and of the Chilean Colorectal Surgical Society.
Prof. Beets-Tan has authored or co-authored more than 250 papers, which have been cited over 8,300 times. She has authored over 35 chapters and edited several books and is also a part of the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals, leading and taking part in international guideline panels of colorectal disease management. She is a member of the research panels of the Dutch Organisation of Science and of the Dutch Cancer Society.
Prof. Beets-Tan has delivered more than 400 invited lectures and has received several teaching awards, including the 2013 ESOR Best Teacher Award and the ISMRM Outstanding Teacher Award in 2008, 2009 and 2014.
