March 8, 2019 – As the European Society of Radiology (ESR) celebrates International Women’s Day, it is time to reflect on one of the biggest success stories of ECR 2019, Women in Focus. This pioneer programme led by Prof. Hedvig Hricak, celebrated the role of women working in medicine and truly embodied the ECR’s theme this year, encouraging everyone to explore ‘The Bigger Picture’.
Women in Focus was one of the most popular highlights of this year’s congress. Each and every session of the event was crowded with many of the dedicated remote viewing areas also being used for those unable to fit into The Church. Attendees enjoyed hearing insights from a range of accomplished, high-profile speakers through informed lectures and exciting panel discussions
The programme covered issues, which are not typically featured in the ECR scientific programme. These included topics such as gender, leadership, mentoring and generational issues, not only in radiology, but also in healthcare and professional working environments more generally. Given its broad and timely themes that were relevant to both radiologists and non-radiologists alike, Women in Focus became the ECR’s first ever programme to be fully open to the public. A networking light lunch was offered alongside the event each day, providing attendees with the opportunity to continue the discussions held during the sessions, whilst enjoying live music and refreshments in a dedicated Woman in Focus lounge area.
Prof. Hricak, Chairperson of the Department of Radiology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, and champion of female leadership, was delighted by the popularity of the programme and the engagement people had with the important issues discussed in it: “We set out to bring something completely new and unique to ECR and I believe we achieved that. We were all delighted with the marvellous attendance we saw at all four sessions of Women in Focus, as well as the feedback we received from the audience. It is encouraging that so many radiologists and other professionals, both male and female, engaged in these important and timely topics. We sincerely and wholeheartedly thank all of our moderators, speakers and panellists for their commitment to bringing the sessions to life, as well as the invaluable wisdom they imparted throughout the programme.” To watch a full-length interview with Prof. Hricak at ECR 2019, click here.
Given its success, the European Society of Radiology (ESR) has decided to make the ‘In Focus’ programme a permanent feature of the ECR. Every year, a new issue will be selected, each one focused on a broader professional or healthcare related topic that will be interesting not only for radiologists but also for the wider public.
