Professor Regina Beets-Tan, 2nd Vice-President of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), named to serve on the mission board for the cancer mission of Horizon Europe, the new research & innovation initiative mandated by the European Commission.

Vienna, August 14, 2019 (ESR) – Professor Beets-Tan has been appointed to the mission board of the EU research mission on cancer, part of the European Commission’s research initiative known as Horizon Europe. She has been selected to serve on the 15-member board for the cancer mission, tasked with shaping their mission and further defining what research receives funding within the cancer mission’s mandate, beginning in 2021. The selection of mission board committee members was made from over 2000 applicants across the European Union and beyond, encompassing experts from a broad range of backgrounds including academics, innovators, civil society, industry, finance and end-users.

Horizon Europe is a planned seven-year European Union scientific research initiative meant to succeed the current Horizon 2020 program which began in 2014. The European Commission approved a plan to establish five missions within Horizon Europe’s framework aimed at elevating the standards of research and prioritising investments towards societal challenges, cancer among others, which require a level-playing field and cross-sectoral collaboration. Besides cancer, these include climate change, healthy oceans, climate-neutral cities and healthy soil and food. In addition to supporting the global competitiveness of the European Union in the future, these clearly defined missions are meant to increase the effectiveness of forthcoming funding allotment and achieve faster scientific and technological advancements.

Professor Beets-Tan, with appointment to the mission board on cancer, will have the opportunity to drive cancer research, with a particular focus on imaging technologies which has been central to her esteemed career in the field of oncologic imaging and research. She has been a leading researcher of cancer imaging and is ideally suited to support programs that advance innovative and substantive research in a medical field with ample room for breakthrough. In addition to her research, she has supported close cooperation between radiological and clinical groups with the singular goal of benefiting the patient and has proven her capacity for building collaboration.

As a member of the Executive Council of the ESR and current Past-President of the European Society of Oncologic Imaging (ESOI), board member of the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) and the President of the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR), she is uniquely intertwined throughout the European radiological and cancer community as both a researcher and engaged society leader.

Professor Regina Beets-Tan serves as chair of the Department of Radiology at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam. Additionally, she is full professor of radiology at the University of Maastricht and serves as adjunct professor of abdominal and oncological radiology at the University of Southern Denmark.
