In recognition of his outstanding, internationally-recognised achievements and leadership in the fields of radiodiagnostics and breast imaging, Professor Francesco Sardanelli of San Donato Milanese, Italy, will receive the ESR Gold Medal at ECR 2021.

Professor Francesco Sardanelli graduated in Medicine magna cum laude in 1982 and certified in Radiodiagnostics magna cum laude in 1986 at the University of Genoa.

He began his career as a staff radiologist in the Department of Radiology at the San Martino Hospital, Genoa, and in 1992 became Adjunct Professor of the postgraduate course in Radiodiagnostics at the University of Genoa. From 1999 to 2001, he was Director of the Department of Radiology at the Biomedical Institute in Genoa and from 2001 was the Director of the Department of Radiology at the research hospital (IRCCS) Policlinico San Donato in San Donato Milanese, Milan.

He served as Adjunct Professor at the postgraduate course in Radiodiagnostics at the University of Milan (2002-2005) and in 2006 was appointed as Associate Professor of Radiology while also acting as Director of the postgraduate course in Nuclear Medicine (2008 to 2010).

In 2015, he became a full professor of Radiology at the University of Milan and was elected as Director of the postgraduate course in Radiodiagnostics.

Professor Sardanelli has served as editorial board member across many publications such as European Radiology (2002-2006, 2012-2016), La Radiologia Medica (2005-2016), The Breast (2007-today), The American Journal of Roentgenology (2009-2020), Insights into Imaging (2012-2016), and Clinical and Translational Imaging (2014-2018), has acted as a reviewer for over 60 medical journals, and in 2016 was appointed as Editor-in-Chief of European Radiology Experimental by the European Society of Radiology (ESR).

He has also held many roles across radiological and medical societies including ESR Research Committee member (2006-2010, 2012-2015), member of the National Council of the Italian Society of Medical Radiology (SIRM) (2007-2010), Director of European Network Assessment of Imaging in Medicine (EuroAIM) (2009-today), co-founder and Executive Committee member of Breast Centres Certification (2010-today), President of the European Society of Breast Imaging (2012-2015), Executive Committee member of the European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists (EUSOMA) (2020-today), Vice President of the Quality Assurance Group, European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer (2015-today), member of the Smith Kline Foundation, Italian group "Artificial Intelligence, healthcare biomedical research" (2019-today), and, most recently, member of the external review group of the World Health Organization Rapid Advice Guide on radiological imaging in COVID-19 management (2020).

Professor Sardanelli has held over 600 talks at medical meetings, authored eight books, 56 book chapters, and over 500 full articles, and also holds honorary memberships at the Royal College of Breast Radiologists, United Kingdom (2009), and the Iranian Society Radiology (2014).
