Michael N. Brant-Zawadzki is the Executive Medical Director of Neurosciences at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, California, and also holds an adjunct Clinical Professorship in Neuroradiology at Stanford University.

Born in 1949 in Warsaw, Poland, he earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University in 1971, and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where he received the Hoffheimer prize, awarded to the top graduating medical student. He trained in radiology and neuroradiology at Stanford University Medical Center, after which he spent six years on the Neuroradiology faculty of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). In 1986 he started working at Hoag Memorial Hospital as Director of MRI, a field in which he has excelled throughout his career. He notably received the special Gold Medal from the Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine in 1993 for outstanding pioneering achievements in magnetic resonance imaging, and was awarded Fellowship of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine in 1997.

Professor Brant-Zawadzki has authored and co-authored more than 180 papers in professional journals. He has also authored or co-authored 17 textbooks and has a large number of book chapters to his name. He lectures nationally and internationally, and is a consultant to the industry in the imaging, pharmaceutical and informatics fields.

He is a member of multiple professional societies and sat on the Executive Committee of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance Medicine, as well as on the Task Force on Clinical Guidelines for the North American Spine Society. In addition, he has served as President of the Western Neuroradiological Society, is a member of the Programme Committee of the American Society of Neuroradiology, and has been Chairman of the Public Information Committee of the Radiological Society of North America.

He currently serves on the editorial board of numerous professional publications, including JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association)and the American Journal of Neuroradiology.

Last but not least, Professor Brant-Zawadzki is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology and was elected among the Best Doctors in America in 2005 and 2007–8.

He is married to Victoria Brant-Zawadzki.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution and pioneering achievements in neuroradiology Professor Brant-Zawadzki will present the Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen Honorary Lecture 'Diagnostic radiation and carcinogenesis: What do we know?' at ECR 2010.
