Andy Adam is Professor of Interventional Radiology at the University of London.

Born in 1951, he completed his training at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, University of London in 1977, after which he spent four years in internal medicine, cardiology and oncology. He then trained in radiology at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, obtaining Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Surgeons. In 1992 he was appointed to the first professorial chair of interventional radiology in Europe, at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Medical School at the University of London.

His research work has shaped clinical practice internationally, especially in the fields of interventional radiology and surgery. He has made extensive original contributions to medical and scientific literature and has published ten books. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology and as Joint Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Interventional Radiology.

Professor Adam has demonstrated leadership skills on a global level. He is President of the Royal College of Radiologists, has served as President of seven other national and international societies, and was ECR 2006 Congress President.

He has received numerous honours and awards, including fourteen eponymous lectures, honorary fellowship of twelve national radiological societies, and four gold medals. In 2008, Professor Adam’s contribution to medical research was recognised by the award of Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

He has had a defining influence on the development of European radiology as one of the architects of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), which he helped to create by merging the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) with the European Association of Radiology (EAR), serving as its President in 2006–2007.

In recognition of his outstanding career, his strong leadership skills and his tremendous work within a society he assisted in creating and helped to prosper, Professor Adam will be awarded the Gold Medal of the European Society of Radiology at ECR 2010.
