In recognition of his exceptional contribution to radiology, his outstanding leadership skills and his tremendous commitment to the ESR, Professor Borut Marincek will be awarded the Gold Medal of the European Society of Radiology at ECR 2011.

Borut Marincek is Professor emeritus of Radiology at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, where he has served as Chairman of the Institute of Diagnostic Radiology at the University Hospital since 1997. He is a very well known figure and a respected leader and educator throughout the world of radiology.

Born in Solothurn, Switzerland, Professor Marincek completed his medical degree at the University of Zurich in 1970 before undertaking a residency in pathology, diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiation oncology at the University Hospitals of Zurich and Berne. On completion of his training in radiology, he took on his first professional position as Clinical Associate at the Institute of Diagnostic Radiology, Berne University Hospital, followed by a research fellowship in diagnostic oncologic radiology at Stanford University Hospital (USA) in 1979-1981.

Professor Marincek is the author or co-author of more than 290 peer-reviewed articles and more than 50 books and book chapters. He has given more than 220 lectures, orations and invited lectures at medical schools and meetings throughout Europe and overseas. Although well known for his work in gastrointestinal and abdominal radiology, Professor Marincek has maintained a broad focus throughout his career, and includes genitourinary, oncologic, cardiovascular and emergency radiology among his many scientific interests. 

He sits on the editorial boards of several journals, including European Gastroenterology & Hepatology Review, Hungarian Radiology, and the Advisory Editorial Board of European Radiology, and is the Abdominal Imaging Section Editor for Eurorad. He has received many honours and awards from national and international radiological societies, including honorary membership of the German Radiological Society, the Royal Belgian Radiological Society, the Radiological Society of North America and the European Society of Cardiac Radiology, as well as the Jubilee Award, honorary membership, and the H.R. Schinz medal of the Swiss Society of Radiology, and the Distinguished International Member Award from the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiologists, USA.

Professor Marincek is a member of numerous professional associations, including the Swiss Society of Radiology, the German Radiological Society, the Radiological Society of North America, the European Society of Cardiovascular Radiology, and the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology, of which he served as president in 2007-2009.

An active and valuable contributor to the ESR’s many activities, he has been a member of the European School of Radiology Steering Committee since 2006 and served as Congress President for ECR 2009.
