In recognition of his exceptional contributions to medical research, particularly in the field of neuroradiology, the European Society of Radiology has invited Professor Paul M. Parizel to present the Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen Honorary Lecture at ECR 2014.
Paul M. Parizel is chairman of Antwerp University Hospital’s department of radiology and full professor of radiology at the University of Antwerp’s faculty of medicine. He is also an elected member of the University of Antwerp’s board of trustees, representing the faculty of medicine and health sciences.
In 1982, Prof. Parizel received his medical degree (summa cum laude) from the University of Antwerp and he later went on to earn a PhD degree with a dissertation on ‘The influence of field strength on magnetic resonance imaging: a comparative study in physiochemical phantoms, isolated brain specimens and clinical applications’. He then continued his research thanks to a three-year grant from the Belgian government’s National Foundation for Scientific Research.
An enthusiastic researcher, Prof. Parizel’s main scientific interests lie in the fields of neuroradiology and MRI. His research focuses mainly on integrating basic science into clinical applications and he has striven to combine scientific research with patient-oriented imaging throughout his career. He has authored and co-authored more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers and more than 30 book chapters. He is also an active teacher at many scientific meetings and courses on neuroradiology.
In recognition of his work, Prof. Parizel has received many awards and honours throughout his career, including the ECR’s Best Presentation Award, the CompuRAD Exhibition award, the Kodak Grant from the Royal Belgian Society of Radiology and the Astra Foundation Chair for lectures in medicine. He has also been awarded honorary fellowship by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiology, as well as honorary membership from the Serbian Society of Radiology and the Russian Society of Neuroradiology.
An active member of many scientific societies and organisations, Prof. Parizel served as president of the Royal Belgian Radiological Society of Radiology, from 1999 to 2000, and the European Society of Neuroradiology, from 2010 to 2012. At ECR 2014 he will deliver theWilhelm Conrad Röntgen Honorary Lecture entitled ‘Mysteries of the human brain unveiled: imaging of white matter microstructure and neuroplasticity’.
