It is a well-established tradition that on the final day of the congress, ECR Today looks ahead to next year’s ECR. We therefore spoke with Professor Boris Brkljačić from Zagreb, Croatia, the incoming ESR President, who is in charge of ECR 2020. He shared with us some of his ideas and plans for the next European Congress of Radiology.

Every year the ESR Office suggests several congress poster concepts, created by professional designers, to the Congress President and PPC members, which then select their favourite. The poster you can see here was the best of the proposed options.
It resembles Rembrandt’s artwork, with sharp light and dark contrast, and is in good accordance with the slogan for ECR 2020: ‘A Clear Vision for Radiology’. The small floating object represents artificial intelligence, which will be an important topic at the congress, and the names of the ECR 2020 ‘ESR meets’ countries are visible at the bottom of the poster. The 2020 poster contains fewer colours and illustrations compared to the 2019 poster and is concordant with the visual style of the ESR’s main scientific publication, the journal European Radiology.
The ECR 2020 Programme Team Brochure includes all the Programme Planning Committee Members, the Scientific Subcommittee Chairpersons and the staff members of the ECR Scientific Programme Department.
ECR 2020 will be held March 11 – 15, 2020 in Vienna, Austria. The congress venue's address is: Austria Center Vienna, Bruno-Kreisky-Platz 1, 1220 Vienna, Austria.
In 2014, the ECR was awarded the Austrian Ecolabel (Österreichisches Umweltzeichen) for the first time, making it the largest officially certified green congress in Europe. This achievement followed the implementation of numerous measures designed to reduce the congress’ environmental impact, and it reflected a deepened commitment on the part of the ESR to making the congress sustainable. Every year we strive to expand our efforts by applying our green approach to all major activities related to the congress. Find some examples below.
Minimising the CO2 emissions is of central concern when running a green congress. Large congresses are by their nature power hungry events. Our venue, the Austria Center Vienna, prioritises green energy, which is essential to limiting a congress’ carbon footprint. Among other things, our venue, which also bears the Austrian Ecolabel, features a 120 square metre solar array, which supplies thermal energy used to heat water in its kitchens and toilets.
Encouraging and enabling the use of public transport by congress attendees is another means by which the ECR’s carbon footprint can be diminished. Vienna’s fully integrated public transport network makes getting to and from the congress simple no matter where attendees stay in the city.
Improving waste management is another important goal for any green congress. To reduce unnecessary waste, the ESR works with environmentally certified caterers who utilise reusable plates, drinking vessels and cutlery. Exhibitors are encouraged to reuse their stands and decoration and discouraged to distribute giveaways. Further, the amount of printed material used at the congress has been reduced by making more materials, such as the congress’ programme, easily accessible online. For printed materials environmentally friendly paper is used.
Through a major expansion of the ECR Online programme, ECR 2018 attracted 6,415 online viewers, a development that is very much in the spirit of green meetings. This particular project will be extended further over the coming years.
Please support us in our endeavour to keep our congress green!
