The European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS) have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reaffirming their commitment to collaborative efforts in lung health, with a focus on imaging, education, and joint advocacy.
In a time of rising attention to respiratory diseases and lung cancer screening in particular, this renewed partnership reflects the ESR’s emphasis on multidisciplinarity and the shared responsibility of medical specialists to improve prevention, diagnosis, and patient outcomes. The collaboration is especially timely as the societies work together to support the implementation of lung cancer screening programmes across Europe as part of an EU-funded EU4Health project with plans to sustain and further expand collaboration in the field in the future.
Under the MoU, ESR and ERS will pursue joint educational programmes, engage in research and clinical guideline development, and coordinate advocacy activities aimed at European health policymakers and stakeholders.
Professor Andrea Rockall, Chair of the ESR Board of Directors, said: “Imaging is central to diagnosing and managing respiratory disease, but impact only comes through collaboration. By working hand-in-hand with ERS, we amplify our ability to shape clinical standards and health policy—and ultimately improve outcomes for people across Europe.”
Professor Silke Ryan, President of the ERS, commented: “We greatly value our partnership with the ESR. Radiology is indispensable to respiratory medicine, and this renewed agreement allows us to align our expertise more closely to support innovation in lung health—particularly in education, screening, and evidence-based care.”
The agreement remains in effect for three years and serves as a strategic platform for the two societies to implement shared priorities across clinical and policy domains.
