ESR and the MICCAI Society Align to Accelerate Innovation in Imaging and Computer Assisted Intervention

The European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Society (MICCAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise and deepen their collaboration across the domains of medical image computing, machine learning, computer-assisted interventions, and radiological science.

This partnership reflects the ESR’s broader commitment to multidisciplinarity in radiology, uniting imaging experts with computer scientists and engineers to advance innovation at the intersection of data, technology, and patient care. Together, they will aim to advance translational research, education, and application in fields ranging from image interpretation to robotic-assisted interventions.

Through this agreement, the ESR and MICCAI will cooperate on a range of initiatives and engagement opportunities for their members, including joint scientific challenges, collaborative research projects, and educational events that bridge clinical practice with computational and machine learning innovation. In particular, ESR experts will support the development of imaging-focused topics for MICCAI’s high-profile scientific challenges, with leading solutions invited to be presented at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR).

Professor Andrea Rockall, Chair of the ESR Board of Directors, commented: “Radiology is undergoing a transformation, powered by collaboration across disciplines. This agreement with MICCAI allows us to collaborate on solutions that are not only technically advanced but clinically relevant. Together, we can ensure that progress in medical image computing directly enhances patient outcomes.”

Professor Marius George Linguraru, President of MICCAI, added: “The MICCAI Society is delighted to partner with the ESR. Our fields are deeply intertwined, and this collaboration will enable more effective dialogue between imaging researchers and radiologists. By joining forces, we can accelerate the adoption of robust, validated innovations in imaging and intervention.”

The MoU establishes a three-year framework for cooperation, encouraging the continuous exchange of ideas, expertise, and educational resources between the radiological and computational imaging communities.

About the European Society of Radiology (ESR)
The European Society of Radiology (ESR) is one of the world’s largest and most influential radiology organisations, dedicated to advancing medical imaging for improved patient care. With more than 140,000 members worldwide, ESR promotes education, research, and innovation in radiology. The society organises the annual European Congress of Radiology (ECR), one of the world’s leading medical imaging meetings, bringing together professionals from across the globe.

About the MICCAI Society
The Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) Society is the leading international forum for research, education and practice in the field of medical image computing, machine learning in medical imaging, and computer assisted medical interventions and robotics. The MICCAI Society promotes and fosters the exchange of advanced knowledge, expertise and experiences of outstanding scientists, physicians and educators from leading academic, clinical, governmental and commercial institutions around the world. The annual MICCAI Society Conference brings together more than 2,000 scientists, engineers, physicians, surgeons, educators and students from over 60 countries to share the latest in medical imaging research, artificial intelligence in healthcare and computer assisted intervention technologies.
