With the publication of the European Health Data Space in the EU’s Official Journal, the European Society of Radiology (ESR) has joined 39 healthcare associations across Europe, representing patients, healthcare professionals, and the medical technology industry, in co-signing a joint statement on the implementation of the European Health Data Space (EHDS).
The statement highlights the importance of meaningful stakeholder engagement in the EHDS implementation phase and outlines key recommendations to ensure the successful adoption of EHDS initiatives across Member States.
The signatories call on policymakers to:
- Ensure an effective Stakeholder Forum that fosters collaboration and meaningful contributions.
- Support capacity building and funding to equip all stakeholders, including healthcare professionals and researchers, with the necessary knowledge and resources.
- Guarantee transparency in the EHDS Board’s decision-making, ensuring stakeholder perspectives are reflected in EHDS implementation.
By actively engaging with a diverse range of voices – from clinicians and researchers to patients and industry – the EHDS can enhance trust, usability, and interoperability across Europe’s healthcare landscape.

The ESR and its fellow signatories stand ready to contribute to the EHDS rollout. By embedding transparency, inclusivity, and robust capacity building into the EHDS framework, Europe has the opportunity to create a health data ecosystem that enhances healthcare outcomes and solidifies the EU’s leadership in digital health innovation.
