ESR Launches Modern Radiology – The rebranded eBook for Undergraduates Education in Radiology

November 22, 2024 – Vienna, Austria — The European Society of Radiology is proud to announce the release of Modern Radiology, an essential and free educational resource for radiology students, residents, and professionals worldwide. This learning tool, a rebranded version of the eBook for Undergraduate Education in Radiology, is a dynamic blend of text, images, schematics, and clinical imaging cases. Now covering both undergraduate and postgraduate educational needs, Modern Radiology is an invaluable resource that will elevate radiology education.

Building on the success of the first edition, Modern Radiology has undergone significant updates to reflect its growing scope. Initially focused on providing fundamental radiology knowledge to undergraduates, the eBook has evolved to encompass more advanced content tailored to postgraduate training levels I and II of the ESR’s European Training Curriculum. With contributions from 105 renowned European experts, this comprehensive eBook contains 28 chapters over 2,500 pages, establishing itself as a definitive reference for radiology education. At present, 8 chapters out of those 28 have undergone a redesign.

“The rebranding of the eBook became necessary because the scope shifted from purely pregraduate teaching to include more contents related to postgraduate teaching,” explains Prof. Minerva Becker, Vice President of the ESR and former Chair of the ESR Education Committee. “The new title, Modern Radiology, reflects its role as a living, evolving resource for modern radiology training.”

A hallmark of the new version is its striking graphical design featuring Asklepios with contemporary glasses, symbolizing the blend of classical medical teaching with modern educational approaches. The updated eBook is not only more visually engaging but also optimized for easy navigation, offering the means to seamlessly switch between organ-based topics, technical chapters, and supplemental resources.

Prof. Becker emphasises the collaborative effort behind the project, stating, “Throughout the realization of this exciting project, I continued to be impressed by the enthusiasm exposed by so many authors offering and contributing their time, effort, and material. Modern Radiology embodies a collaborative spirit and unwavering commitment to this fascinating medical discipline.”

You can read more insights on Modern Radiology from Prof. Becker in her interview accessible here.

As a living document, the eBook will continue to evolve, with plans already underway to introduce new features, such as video content, enhanced learning objectives, and translations into additional languages. This ongoing commitment to innovation ensures that radiologists at every stage of their careers can access up-to-date, high-quality educational resources.

Modern Radiology is available online for free, making radiology education more accessible and comprehensive than ever. This indispensable tool is already being integrated into medical curricula across Europe and embraced by a global community of educators and learners dedicated to advancing radiology knowledge and patient care.
