The European Society of Radiology (ESR) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Joseph Schoepf, a pioneer in cardiac radiology and an internationally recognised leader in cardiovascular imaging.
Originally from Austria and Germany, Prof. Schoepf completed his medical education and radiology training at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. His career took him to Harvard Medical School before he settled at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where he served as Professor of Radiology, Cardiovascular Medicine, and Paediatrics.
At MUSC, he established one of the world’s leading cardiovascular imaging programmes and led the Division of Cardiovascular Imaging. His research in photon-counting CT, dual-energy CT, CT-derived fractional flow reserve, and myocardial perfusion imaging placed him at the forefront of technological innovation in medical imaging.
Prof. Schoepf was a former President of the North American Society for Cardiovascular Imaging (NASCI) and held honorary membership in the European Society of Cardiac Radiology (ESCR), recognising his outstanding contributions to the field on both sides of the Atlantic.
Beyond his scientific achievements, Prof. Schoepf was a dedicated mentor who supported the development of cardiovascular imaging programmes worldwide, sharing his expertise generously with colleagues and trainees across continents.
The ESR extends its deepest condolences to Prof. Schoepf’s family, friends, and the global radiology community. His enduring legacy will continue to shape cardiovascular imaging for generations to come.
