On 6 February 2025, the European Commission, together with the ESR, and the European Federation for Cancer Images (EUCAIM) brought together 160 leading experts from policymaking, research, healthcare, and industry to explore how the European Cancer Imaging Initiative harnesses health data and AI to advance cancer detection and treatment and its role in the context of the European Health Data Space and Europe’s AI Strategy.
Prof. Carlo Catalano, Chair of the ESR Board of Directors, outlined how AI and data are already transforming radiology workflows, making early detection, diagnosis and treatment planning more precise and efficient. The ESR also reiterated its full support of the European Cancer Imaging Initiative and emphasized that a supportive policy environment and investment in infrastructure are key to realising AI’s full potential for European healthcare.
Prof. Regina Beets-Tan, EIBIR Scientific Director, presented the European Society of Radiology-led EU Health Policy Platform Thematic Network Joint Statement on Advancing Precision Medicine for Europe’s Cancer Patients with AI-powered Imaging, endorsed by 80+ stakeholder organisations, calling for AI’s integration into clinical workflows to enhance patient care, while ensuring that AI models are trustworthy, generalizable and ready for clinical deployment.
Stakeholders at the event were in agreement that EUCAIM’s Cancer Image Europe platform is an accelerator that will facilitate medical research and innovation to better understand, diagnose and fight cancer, leading to better outcomes for Europe’s patients.
