ESR Publishes AI Act Statement to Guide the EU AI Act Implementation for Safe and Effective AI Integration in Radiology

Vienna, 6 March 2025 – The European Society of Radiology (ESR), under the lead of the ESR AI Working Group, has published its statement, “Guiding AI in Radiology: ESR’s Recommendations for Effective Implementation of the European AI Act,” in Insights into Imaging. This comprehensive document offers policy recommendations to ensure that AI technologies are integrated into radiology in a way that upholds patient safety, clinical reliability, and transparency, while also fostering innovation.

As the EU Artificial Intelligence Act moves into its implementation phase, the ESR AI Working Group has conducted a detailed assessment of the regulation, analysing its key provisions and identifying areas where further clarity and guidance are needed.

“The AI Act represents a pivotal opportunity to establish clear guidelines for the seamless integration of AI into medical imaging practices. By prioritizing safety and reliability, we are committed to ensuring thorough evaluation and validation of AI technologies before and after their clinical deployment,” the statement affirms.

Comprising leading radiologists with expertise and long-standing experience with the safe and effective use of AI in imaging and diagnostics, the AI Working Group developed the statement through a structured, multi-phase process, including literature review and collaborative thematic discussions to build consensus on key recommendations.

Professor Elmar Kotter, ESR AI Working Group Coordinator, said: “The European AI Act will fundamentally shape the future of artificial intelligence in medical imaging, and our recommendations aim to ensure its effective and safe implementation. By addressing key aspects such as AI literacy, high-risk classification, data governance, and human oversight, we emphasize the importance of transparency and patient safety. This statement reflects the European Society of Radiology’s commitment to guiding AI integration in radiology, fostering innovation while upholding the highest standards of care”.
