European Radiology is a scientific journal, owned by the European Society of Radiology (ESR).

Online access to European Radiology is free to all members of the ESR; the journal publishes high-quality original papers and short communications in the field of radiology. The best research, spanning a variety of topical fields is published on a monthly basis, and authors and researchers are provided with an established platform for the publication of scientific material in a quick and professional way. In 2016, out of 2,300 initial submissions, 508 were published (rejection rate 78%) and the journal has an Impact Factor of 3.64.

Professor Maximilian Reiser will step down from the position as Editor-in-Chief of European Radiology as of October 2017. The ESR Board of Directors now wishes to identify his successor during 2017 so that there can be a gradual hand over of responsibilities during the latter part of 2017. European Radiology Vol 28 in 2018 will carry the new Editor-in-Chief’s Editorial and choice of contents.

The post (3 years in the first instance) is open to established radiologists who are or recently have been practising radiology at staff/consultant level in a renowned institution. They should have a demonstrably strong record in scientific publication and experience of editorial work of at least Editorial Board level on an internationally respected radiological journal.

It is expected that the new Editor-in-Chief is able to invest the majority of his/her professional week to the journal. The post is remunerated with € 120.000 per annum (taxable according to national jurisdiction).

The Editor-in-Chief will work in close cooperation with the editorial office, located in the ESR headquarter in Vienna.

Duties of the Editor-in-Chief:

  • Maintain and improve the flagship ESR journal European Radiology
  • Oversee all aspects of the journal’s peer-review process – this includes
    • Employing all appropriate strategies to increase the impact factor
    • Prompt dissemination of submitted papers out for expert review
    • Prompt and courteous handling of decisions
    • Handling of queries and complaints
  • Identification of suitable topics for editorials and commentaries.
  • Close co-operation with editors of other ESR publications
  • Close liaison with Deputy Editors, Section Editors and Editorial board and chairing of the annual meeting of the Editorial Board at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR)
  • Provide encouragement of and feedback to all authors and reviewers
  • Develop and maintain a keen and enthusiastic Editorial Board
  • Report regularly to the ESR leadership on the performance of the journal
  • Visit international conferences and Editors’ meetings to promote the journal

Qualities required:

  • A wide knowledge of most branches of radiology
  • An international reputation as a research radiologist
  • An understanding of how radiological practice varies from country to country
  • Ability to network effectively with radiologists across Europe and worldwide
  • A dynamic, well-organised and reliable character with an ability to prioritise and meet deadlines
  • High standard of written and spoken English
