Call for Editor-in-chief

Insights into Imaging is a fully open-access journal owned by the European Society of Radiology. Its mission is to enhance critical thinking, provide insight into how radiology is currently practiced, and analyse whether it needs to be re-shaped.
The journal publishes original articles, educational and critical review articles, and position and recommendation papers from leading societies and institutions. Articles published in the journal are downloaded more than 3.6 million times per year, and Insights into Imaging has an Impact Factor 2022 of 4.7.

The current Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Luis Marti-Bonmati, will conclude his term of office in December 2024. Therefore, the ESR Board of Directors wishes to recruit a successor who would start working in mid-2024 with a gradual handover of duties from the current editor and become fully installed as of January 2025.

The position (three years in the first term with possible extension upon mutual agreement) is open to highly regarded experts in radiology with international recognition and proven scientific leadership in a renowned academic or research institution.

  • Pro-active cooperation with the other ESR Journal Family journals (currently European Radiology and European Radiology Experimental)
  • Creating and implementing an active commissioning strategy for articles

  • Maintaining and regularly liaising with a high-profile Editorial Board
  • Reporting on the performance of Insights into Imaging to the Chief Editor of the ESR Journal Family and chair of the ESR Publication Committee on a regular basis, and to the ESR Board of Directors upon request
  • Connect within the scientific community, network for, and represent the journal by e.g., attending scientific meetings to stimulate submission of high-quality scientific work, among others

Profile

The successful candidate must have

  • An international track record in scientific leadership
  • Affiliation or recent affiliation as a research leader in a renowned research or academic institution

  • A wide knowledge of most branches of radiology, and an understanding of how radiological practice varies from country to country
  • ESR full membership in good standing

The new Editor-in-Chief will invest a substantial part of their professional week in the journal and will be supported remotely by the Editorial Office team based in the ESR headquarters in Vienna. The Editor-in-Chief will receive remuneration for this position, which is subject to negotiation.

The Editor-in-Chief takes no responsibility for business decisions, which remain solely with the ESR. Any change in editorial policies that may have financial implications must be discussed with the Chief Editor of the ESR Journal Family and the ESR Board of Directors prior to implementation.
