Dear ESR Member,
As Chairman of the ESR Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to provide you with a short update of our society’s ongoing activities since ECR 2018. Our congress reached a new record attendance, for which I would like to sincerely thank you all and which shows that we are on the right track in further enhancing interdisciplinarity. In addition to continuing with what has proved successful, we have started working on new endeavours for our society right after ECR closed.
Our Board of Directors held its first meeting of the current working year at the beginning of April. A central theme throughout the agenda was the need to stay innovative in order to meet future challenges in radiology and to serve our members even better. To achieve this, we are planning to make our educational services accessible to a much wider target group, to become more visible on the scientific level, to increasingly deal with professional and quality related matters and to continue fostering our relations with related disciplines. For example, I am happy to let you know that our successful Shape your Skills programme for radiographers will be offered again at ECR 2019 with even broader application criteria. All these topics will be pursued in our next meetings of the Board of Directors and the Executive Council that are scheduled for the beginning of June in Berlin.
As a result of our last meeting, I am particularly happy to welcome Georgia as the ESR Support Initiative country for the period from March 2019 to 2020. We look forward to working with the Georgian Association of Radiologists in this social responsibility project next year.
In addition, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Prof. Nikoleta Traykova, who has been appointed as our new Chairwoman of the ESR Communication and External Affairs Committee by our Executive Council until March 2020. You can read about both of these in the respective chapters of the current newsletter edition.
Besides the ESR’s aforementioned relations with other disciplines, our collaboration with other radiological societies around the globe continues to be high on the agenda. During or immediately after the ECR, we renewed our memoranda of understanding with a number of partner societies, namely the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology, the Canadian Association of Radiologists, the Chinese Society of Radiology, the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association, the Mexican Federation as well as the Mexican Society of Radiology, the Interamerican College of Radiology, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists and the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics. A new MoU supplementing the existing one was signed with the American College of Radiology and a new, trilateral one with the Radiological Society of Thailand and the Royal College of Radiologists of Thailand. Further MoUs are in preparation. Furthermore, a meeting with African radiological societies was held at ECR for the first time, in preparation of ‘ESR meets Africa’ at ECR 2019 and to increase cooperation with our colleagues from this continent in general. Together with the leadership of the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists, the ESR Board of Directors also decided to foresee an ‘ISRRT meets Africa’ session at ECR 2019, for the first time, in order to embrace also radiographers from Africa. The European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS) will hold a ‘meets’ session with Denmark.
Since March, the ESR has been represented by Executive Council members at a variety of national and international congresses, and many more official visits are planned for the current working year. This highlights the close contacts the ESR enjoys with its member and partner societies and the impressive network we have built around the world.
I look forward to pursuing all the above mentioned endeavours. Your support is vital for the ESR to continue on the road to success, and I sincerely thank each of you for your ongoing commitment.
