New Research Project ODELIA Launches to Revolutionise Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare using Swarm Learning

On January 1, 2023, a new EU-funded research project establishing an Open Consortium for Decentralized Medical Artificial Intelligence (ODELIA) has officially begun, with the goal of revolutionising Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare through the use of Swarm Learning (SL). Over the next five years, the project aims to overcome the obstacles of data collection in healthcare by utilising SL, where partners work together to train AI models without the need to share any personal patient data. Thereby, ODELIA will break data sharing boundaries and accelerate the scale-up of medical AI in Europe for the benefit of European citizens, patients, and clinicians.

EUCAIM project kicks-off under EIBIR coordination – Radiology leads flagship of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan

24 January 2023 - Following the European Commission launch event of the European Cancer Imaging Initiative in Brussels on 23 January, EIBIR is pleased to announce the official kick-off of the European Federation for Cancer Images (EUCAIM), a ground-breaking federated infrastructure deployment project aiming to power up imaging and AI towards precision medicine for Europe’s cancer patients and citizens.

EUCAIM is the cornerstone of the European Commission initiated European Cancer Imaging Initiative, a flagship of the Europe's Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP), which aims to foster innovation and deployment of digital technologies in cancer treatment and care, to achieve more precise and faster clinical decision-making, diagnostics, treatments and predictive medicine for cancer patients.

The project is scientifically led by Prof. Luis Martí-Bonmatí, Director of the Medical Imaging Department, Chairman of Radiology, La Fe University and Polytechnic Hospital (Valencia, Spain) and coordinated by the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR), established by and headquartered at ESR in Vienna/Austria and is co-funded by the European Commission Digital Europe programme with EUR 18 mio.

European Society of Radiology

Founded in 2005, by merging the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) and the European Association of Radiology (EAR), the European Society of Radiology (ESR) is an apolitical, non-profit organisation dedicated to strengthening and unifying European radiology.

With 130 316 members across the globe, it has grown to become the largest radiological society in the world and hosts one of the biggest and most innovative scientific meetings in Europe, the European Congress of Radiology, in Vienna each year.

The Society works closely with national radiological societies across Europe and further afield, while establishing relationships with major international organisations from other related fields. It also monitors developments on the EU level which could have an impact on research and practice in radiology, with the best interests of the patient as its overriding goal.

The mission of the European Society of Radiology is to serve the healthcare needs of the general public by supporting scientific research, education and training while constantly striving to improve the quality of radiological practice.
