Planet Radiology blooms at ECR 2025: Huge attendance at congress that put sustainability and healthcare equity at its heart

Vienna, Austria – March 4, 2025 – The European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2025 concluded last week after five days of groundbreaking scientific exchange, innovative discussions, and dynamic networking. Under the theme “Planet Radiology,” this year’s congress explored the intersection of radiology, sustainability, and global healthcare equity, delivering an event that will leave a lasting impact on medical imaging and beyond.

With an impressive attendance of 20,522 participants from 131 countries, ECR 2025 reaffirmed its position as one of the world’s leading medical congresses, bringing together radiologists, radiographers, industry leaders, and multidisciplinary experts. With over 1,661 more participants than last year, ECR 2025 marks 9% growth in attendance.

For five days, the congress lived and breathed Planet Radiology, with each area of the Austria Center transformed into a different environment. From deserts to underwater worlds, these scenes were silently watched over by beautifully designed animals.

ECR 2025 opened with the spectacular Opening Ceremony Wonder, a visually stunning celebration of radiology’s role in shaping a healthier, more sustainable future. Memorable musical and acrobatics performances were interlaced with talks from dignitaries including Congress President Andrea Rockall, Deputy Head of the British Embassy Vienna, Emma Baines and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi. Gold Medals were also awarded to outstanding radiologists for their contributions to medical imaging.

One of the highlights of the congress was the In Focus programme, Imagers Fixing the World, part of the In Focus initiative, which showcased inspiring projects that advance both global health equity and planetary sustainability. From AI-driven diagnostics in underserved regions to pioneering green radiology initiatives, these sessions highlighted the transformative power of radiology in shaping a better world. Complimenting this series of sessions was the In Focus lounge, featuring a unique poster installation where attendees could learn more about projects and stories that are benefitting the planet and underserved communities.

The scientific programme continued to push boundaries with the return of the AI Theatre and Exhibition, where attendees engaged with cutting-edge developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning. ECR 2025 also saw the debut of Pixel Pandemonium, a new platform fostering collaboration between early-stage AI/ML researchers and the radiology community. Meanwhile, The Cube offered an immersive space to explore the latest advances in interventional radiology through hands-on workshops and demonstrations, with a special focus given to green practices in IR.

The three plenary lectures of the congress were highly attended as Simon Reeve, Rowland Illing and Linda Moy took to the stage to deliver their important messages on planetary care, cloud-based technology, and ocean safe imaging. Each with a unique format and visual tone, these lectures highlighted how radiologists can make their practice fit for the future.

New to this year’s congress, the Ask Me Anything sessions provided a unique opportunity for attendees to directly engage with leading experts, fostering interactive discussions and deeper insights into the latest research and clinical advancements.

Reflecting on the success of ECR 2025, Congress President Prof. Andrea Rockall remarked, “This congress has truly embodied the spirit of ‘Planet Radiology’. It has been a testament to radiology’s power to shape a healthier planet. The energy, passion, and innovation I witnessed at ECR 2025 was nothing short of inspiring and I hope attendees have taken some of the important messages of the meeting home with them, using the blueprint we have provided to make medical imaging more sustainable and equitable.”

Beyond the scientific and educational aspects, ECR 2025 once again proved to be a hub of collaboration and global exchange. The congress welcomed over 220 industry exhibitors and featured an extensive programme tailored to radiographers, reinforcing its commitment to multidisciplinary engagement.

As ECR 2025 draws to a close, its legacy will continue to drive innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity in radiology. The excitement now builds for ECR 2026, promising another extraordinary chapter in the evolution of medical imaging. With its theme of ‘Rays of Knowledge’, the congress will return to Vienna on March 4-8.
