Guide to Guidelines

Guide to Guidelines

The European Society of Radiology (ESR) seeks to foster the publication of high-quality imaging guidelines.

Writing groups are encouraged to apply for ESR support, which is needs-based and tailored to the individual guideline project. To qualify as an ESR Guideline, authors must accept, at a minimum, pre-submission constructive feedback from an experienced editor. See the process, detailed below.

Proposals are reviewed by ESR officers and staff; accepted guideline projects will be eligible to apply for fast-track peer review if submitted to an ESR journal, as well as for ESR endorsement (subject to editorial acceptance). Find the proposal form below.

Accepted and endorsed papers will benefit from increased promotion and dissemination activities.

PROCESS

1. Pre-submission:

Before contacting the ESR regarding Guideline collaboration, authors should have already identified a need for a Guideline and conceptualised ideas for how they will perform a literature review and analysis, how they will formulate recommendations, and what external expertise they will use or would ideally use. It is at this point the authors should contact the ESR office.

2. Submission:

Authors should fill out and submit the proposal form to [email protected]

The proposal will be evaluated by our experienced editors and the ESR Publications Committee for merit, feasibility, and potential clinical impact. Author groups will be tentatively matched with requested support (as available). Authors can then liaise with external experts.

Submissions will occur through a special invitation link and will benefit from additional office support and expedited peer review and editorial decisions.

3. Post-acceptance:

After being accepted, Guidelines will undergo standard internal editing and evaluation by the Executive Council for ESR Endorsement. Upon publication, these articles will also receive special promotion and dissemination.
