Vienna, Austria, September 2026 – The European Society of Radiology (ESR) is supporting the EU Screening Week, taking place from September 28 to October 4, 2026, with a social media awareness campaign highlighting prevention, early detection and the role of radiology.
Under the campaign message “Radiology saves lives. Get screened.”, the ESR will use a series of dedicated visuals to raise awareness of cardiovascular health checks? as well as breast, lung and prostate cancer screening.
The first EU Screening Week focuses primarily on cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar under the motto “Know your numbers”. The ESR campaign builds on this focus by highlighting how cardiovascular radiology can provide additional information about changes already developing inside the body, often before symptoms appear, and contribute to a more individual assessment of cardiovascular risk.
Beyond cardiovascular health, the campaign also draws attention to the established role of radiology in breast, lung and prostate cancer screening and early detection, highlighting how imaging and radiologists can contribute to earlier detection and better-informed care.
“Prevention and early detection give patients the opportunity to act before disease has progressed,” said Prof. Minerva Becker, Chair of the ESR Board of Directors. “Radiology has an important role to play in this process. Imaging can reveal changes that may not yet be causing symptoms, while radiologists provide the medical expertise needed to interpret these findings and help guide what happens next. During the EU Screening Week, we want to encourage people to understand their risks, participate in appropriate screening programmes and take an active role in their health.”

Raising awareness of radiology’s role
Throughout the EU Screening Week, the ESR will share campaign content across its social media channels, using dedicated visuals for cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, lung cancer and prostate cancer.
The campaign has been developed to communicate these topics in an accessible way to patients and the wider public, while highlighting the role of radiologists in screening, early detection and patient care.
To enable the radiology community to support the initiative, the ESR has also prepared adaptable social media templates for radiological and related societies to share. The materials can be translated into local languages and customised with society logos, alongside ready-to-share campaign graphics.
A dedicated EU Screening Week landing page brings together further information on cardiovascular risk and breast, lung and prostate cancer screening, as well as patient resources explaining imaging examinations and the role of the radiologist.
