This renewal of this membership ensures continued collaboration between Siemens and the ESR on several key initiatives. The most recent of these initiatives was a special giveaway of the ESR Premium Education Package which was exclusively supported by Siemens Healthineers. The giveaway awarded 25 lucky applicants a subscription to the 2022 Premium Education Package – a valuable tool for further education in medical imaging. </strong></p> <p>In line with the ESR’s strategy to provide education to areas with more limited educational opportunities, the giveaway was open to radiologists from Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East. With the Premium Education Package, the winners of the giveaway gain full access to premium services on Eurorad and Education on Demand, as well as access to all both live and on-demand events on ESR Connect.</p> <p>“We highly appreciate joining forces with Siemens Healthineers to work on a variety of initiatives”, stated ESR President Prof. Regina Beets-Tan. “Collaboration with industry partners, in particular our Platinum Supporting Members, is a key part of the ESR’s strategy to build bridges between all stakeholders in healthcare – be they radiologists and clinicians, or patients and medical imaging companies. I hope that the winners of the giveaway enjoy the extensive educational content offered by the Premium Education Package.”</p> <p>“Training and education are key in leveraging the full potential of innovations, especially in underserved and further developed areas, where access to care is still not granted. Therefore, this partnership is more than just a sponsorship. We support the winners from these areas and elsewhere to receive the highest quality education possible, so they can improve healthcare in their countries. At the same time, close collaboration with the ESR and its members is key for us as one of the industry leaders. We get valuable insights into daily clinical practice and can thus constantly evaluate and improve everything we do. We therefore are happy to constantly learn ourselves and support the lucky winners at doing the same”, says Bernd Ohnesorge, President Europe, Middle East and Africa at Siemens Healthineers.</p> <p>To subscribe for a 2022 Premium Education Package, which also offers on-demand access to all ECR 2022 recorded sessions after the event in July, please click <a href="https://connect.myesr.org/esr-premium-education-package/">here</a>.</p> </div> </div> <i class="banner-image force-fullsize"> <picture> <!--[if IE 9]><video style="display: none;"><![endif]--> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_min_width_1200px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=n6Xj-NB0 1x" media="all and (min-width: 1200px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_1199px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=aYdWy1Y_ 1x" media="all and (max-width: 1199px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_1199px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=aYdWy1Y_ 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_991px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=vhHQT3J9 1x" media="all and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_991px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=vhHQT3J9 1x" media="all and (min-width: 768px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_767px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=5cMWOtvd 1x" media="all and (max-width: 767px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <!--[if IE 9]></video><![endif]--> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_767px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=5cMWOtvd" alt="MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </picture> </i> <i class="banner-image"> <picture> <!--[if IE 9]><video style="display: none;"><![endif]--> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_min_width_1200px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=K0ZlCA4W 1x" media="all and (min-width: 1200px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_1199px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=zNsc17Ph 1x" media="all and (max-width: 1199px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_1199px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=zNsc17Ph 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_991px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=yPTAWTmD 1x" media="all and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_991px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=yPTAWTmD 1x" media="all and (min-width: 768px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_767px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=8fjKoPwu 1x" media="all and (max-width: 767px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <!--[if IE 9]></video><![endif]--> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_767px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=8fjKoPwu" alt="MYESR_PageBanner2_web" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </picture> </i> Wed, 18 May 2022 11:44:19 +0000 myESR 3444 at https://www.myesr.org Ukraine Invasion: ESR Call for Support for Ukraine https://www.myesr.org/article/3430 <span property="schema:name">Ukraine Invasion: ESR Call for Support for Ukraine</span> <span rel="schema:author"><span title="View user profile." href="/user/1" lang="" about="/user/1" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">myESR</span> </span> <span property="schema:dateCreated" content="2022-03-10T14:46:06+00:00">Thu, 03/10/2022 - 15:46</span> <div class="row p-relative"> <div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-md-12"> <p>Dear ESR Members,<br /> Dear colleagues and friends,<br />  <br /> We are writing to you with great sympathy for the plight of all Ukrainians. <p><strong>Deer Park, N.Y., August 12, 2021</strong> – DenseBreast-info.org (DB-I) announced that the European Society of Radiology (ESR) now links to DB-I website and educational materials as a resource for members about the screening and risk implications of dense breast tissue. The ESR, the largest radiological society in the world, has over 122,000 members and is connected with 49 European national member societies.</p> <p>The ESR is the latest in a growing number of national and international societies and professional organisations across Europe that provide links to share DenseBreast-info.org resources, including The Royal College of Radiologists, the Society of Radiographers (UK), ESR / Patient Advisory Group, the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS), the International Cancer Control Partnership (ICCP), ecancer.org and leading research charity, Prevent Breast Cancer.</p> <p>“The issue of the implications of dense breast tissue has become of major importance for medical professionals. I am therefore very pleased with this educational measure, which will greatly benefit ESR members. In order to ensure that women across Europe receive appropriate breast care, it is crucial that breast imagers have access to a comprehensive resource such as this,” said Prof. Michael Fuchsjäger, Chairman of the European Society of Radiology.</p> <p>DB-I/Europe is designed to provide education to healthcare professionals about the screening and risk implications of dense breast tissue and value of supplemental screening. New educational tools and resources include:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Dense Breast Primer (introduction)</p> </li> <li> <p>Risk Model Tutorial (includes details on how the models are used, risk model explanations, diagnostic</p> <p>considerations, and a risk model table which includes live links to each model)</p> </li> <li> <p>Map: Comparative Analysis of National Breast Screening Guidelines in Europe (now in a comparative table)</p> </li> <li> <p>Patient Resources (available in over 20 languages)</p> </li> </ul> <p>“Since the launch of DB-I/Europe, discussions and research on the topic have increased and there is a significant need in Europe for medically-sourced educational information about dense tissue,” added Athina Vourtsis, MD, PhD, DenseBreast-info.org European Liaison.</p> <p>“We are glad that ESR will join the growing list of healthcare providers and professional organisations that share DB-I/Europe educational content with their members about the impact of breast density on screening,” said Cheryl Cruwys, DB-I’s European Education Coordinator.</p> <p>DenseBreast-info.org, cited as the most up-to-date and comprehensive resource on the topic, was developed to provide breast density educational tools to health care professionals and patients.</p> <p>###</p> <p>DenseBreast-info, Inc., is a U.S. 501(c)3 non-profit. The DB-I/Europe expansion was made possible by unrestricted educational grants and donations from GE Healthcare, Hologic, Inc., Siemens Healthineers, and Volpara Health.<br />  </p> <img alt="DenseBreastInfo" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="55d5528a-a8c7-4aa9-99c3-62ac569ac4a1" src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/DB-I_Logo.png" class="align-center" /> <p> </p> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-links paragraph--view-mode--default"> <hr class="hide-12"> <p class="hide-12">Further information:</p> <p class="link forward"> <a href="https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A//densebreast-info.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/ESR-release-Aug-21a-final.pdf&amp;data=04%7C01%7C%7C790c3e0a1ea5418a213408d95c3cee79%7C74db0ebba2c64d6a8733c8974e9e3225%7C0%7C0%7C637642239072679223%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=N5iP%2BpmoNuKB%2BvpGJ0pqzG2kYEIb6jG/VgukUqbWEqk%3D&amp;reserved=0" > <i class="pe-7s-paperclip"></i> <span> Download as a PDF </span> </a> </p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <i class="banner-image force-fullsize"> <picture> <!--[if IE 9]><video style="display: none;"><![endif]--> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_min_width_1200px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=n6Xj-NB0 1x" media="all and (min-width: 1200px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_1199px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=aYdWy1Y_ 1x" media="all and (max-width: 1199px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_1199px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=aYdWy1Y_ 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_991px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=vhHQT3J9 1x" media="all and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_991px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=vhHQT3J9 1x" media="all and (min-width: 768px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_767px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=5cMWOtvd 1x" media="all and (max-width: 767px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <!--[if IE 9]></video><![endif]--> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_767px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=5cMWOtvd" alt="MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </picture> </i> <i class="banner-image"> <picture> <!--[if IE 9]><video style="display: none;"><![endif]--> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_min_width_1200px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=K0ZlCA4W 1x" media="all and (min-width: 1200px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_1199px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=zNsc17Ph 1x" media="all and (max-width: 1199px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_1199px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=zNsc17Ph 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_991px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=yPTAWTmD 1x" media="all and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_991px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=yPTAWTmD 1x" media="all and (min-width: 768px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_767px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=8fjKoPwu 1x" media="all and (max-width: 767px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <!--[if IE 9]></video><![endif]--> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_767px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=8fjKoPwu" alt="MYESR_PageBanner2_web" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </picture> </i> Wed, 11 Aug 2021 07:23:47 +0000 myESR 3389 at https://www.myesr.org “Heart meets Brain – Interventionally”: ESR celebrates return to in-person meetings with successful ECR 2021 Summer Edition https://www.myesr.org/article/3383 <span property="schema:name">“Heart meets Brain – Interventionally”: ESR celebrates return to in-person meetings with successful ECR 2021 Summer Edition</span> <span rel="schema:author"><span title="View user profile." href="/user/1" lang="" about="/user/1" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">myESR</span> </span> <span property="schema:dateCreated" content="2021-07-07T14:36:58+00:00">Wed, 07/07/2021 - With an overall session attendance of more than 3,300, accumulated by 106 onsite and 376 online participants over three days, the meeting turned out to be a great test run for ECR 2022, which will also be held as an onsite and online meeting. </strong></p> <p>“It was great to see participants, speakers and industry represents all in one place after such a long time. You could really see just how we have all been craving this return to normality. The meeting was a huge success in terms of its scientific quality, and, with the Oncologic Imaging Course taking place in the same venue at the same time, it provided a perfect opportunity to enjoy a first-class networking event with great synergy. It is not that often, that you meet so many colleagues from different subspecialities in one place, but this is what scientific exchange is all about. For us, this meeting has shown the benefits of in-person meetings and what we have missed about them so much lately,” Programme Director, Prof. Christian Loewe, and coordinators Dr. Dr. Maximilian de Bucourt and Prof. Majda M. Thurnher agreed after the meeting. </p> <p>To share a Viennese cultural experience with viewers from all around the world, Prof. Michael Fuchsjäger, Chairman of the ESR Board of Directors surprised attendees with “Vienna Waits for You”, a six-episode series in which he guided viewers through some of the city’s most famous cultural landmarks. “It made me really happy to finally see participants returning to Vienna. For all those who were still unable to join us in this magnificent city, I wanted to create something special to shorten the waiting time until ECR 2022 next March. ECR is a congress that provides a holistic experience of science, culture and friendship, which is the message we wanted to share with the whole world”, explained Prof. Fuchsjäger.  <br />  <br /> All episodes of “Vienna Waits for You" can be watched on <a href="https://connect.myesr.org/vienna-waits-for-you/">ESR Connect</a>. </p> <p>Twelve exhibiting companies were also present at the congress. Playing an integral part in the meeting, they were directly involved in three simulator training sessions. Participants were also able to use these simulators throughout the meeting, learning directly from the experts present. All exhibitors committed to returning for ECR 2022 to be part of the Cube, the ECR’s interventional radiology feature. </p> <p>The ECR 2021 Summer Edition also marked the kick-off to an entirely new approach to the technical exhibition, which will premiere at ECR 2022 and will remove the aerial border between science and industry. Under the guidance of Prof. Regina Beets-Tan, ECR 2022 President, and with Prof. Michael Fuchsjäger, and former Presidents, Boris Brkljačić, Lorenzo Derchi, Maximilian Reiser and Christian Herold present, this concept was tested on a small scale during the Summer Edition and will be further developed at ECR 2022. </p> <p>The ESR is thrilled that so many of its Premium Education Package holders, who had live and on-demand access to the Summer Edition included in their subscription, joined online to participate in the meeting and to collect CME credits. </p> </div> </div> <i class="banner-image force-fullsize"> <picture> <!--[if IE 9]><video style="display: none;"><![endif]--> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_min_width_1200px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=n6Xj-NB0 1x" media="all and (min-width: 1200px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_1199px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=aYdWy1Y_ 1x" media="all and (max-width: 1199px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_1199px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=aYdWy1Y_ 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_991px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=vhHQT3J9 1x" media="all and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_991px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=vhHQT3J9 1x" media="all and (min-width: 768px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_767px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=5cMWOtvd 1x" media="all and (max-width: 767px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <!--[if IE 9]></video><![endif]--> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_767px/public/2018-06/MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg?itok=5cMWOtvd" alt="MYESR_PageBanner6_web.jpg" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </picture> </i> <i class="banner-image"> <picture> <!--[if IE 9]><video style="display: none;"><![endif]--> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_min_width_1200px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=K0ZlCA4W 1x" media="all and (min-width: 1200px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_1199px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=zNsc17Ph 1x" media="all and (max-width: 1199px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_1199px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=zNsc17Ph 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_991px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=yPTAWTmD 1x" media="all and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_991px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=yPTAWTmD 1x" media="all and (min-width: 768px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_767px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=8fjKoPwu 1x" media="all and (max-width: 767px)" type="image/jpeg"/> <!--[if IE 9]></video><![endif]--> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/header_sm_max_width_767px/public/2018-08/MYESR_PageBanner2_web.jpg?itok=8fjKoPwu" alt="MYESR_PageBanner2_web" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </picture> </i> Wed, 07 Jul 2021 14:36:58 +0000 myESR 3383 at https://www.myesr.org Curriculum for Undergraduate Radiological Education, June 2021 Edition https://www.myesr.org/article/3370 <span property="schema:name">Curriculum for Undergraduate Radiological Education, June 2021 Edition</span> <span rel="schema:author"><span title="View user profile." href="/user/1" lang="" about="/user/1" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">myESR</span> </span> <span property="schema:dateCreated" content="2021-06-22T13:29:12+00:00">Tue, 06/22/2021 - 15:29</span> <div class="row p-relative"> <div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-md-12"> <p>The ESR is proud to announce the publication of the updated version of the <strong><a href="https://www.myesr.org/education/training-curricula">Undergraduate Curriculum for Radiological Education</a></strong>.</p> </div> </div> <div class="row p-relative"> <div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-md-6"> <p>This new iteration of the Curriculum represents a culmination of the ESR efforts aimed at harmonising undergraduate radiological education. This insufficient effectiveness in accurately being able to diagnose thyroid tumors leads to many unclear or unnoticed cases as well as many others that undergo unnecessary surgeries (false positives) and increase the cost of medical healthcare, not to mention the reduction of quality of life of patients.  </p> <p>The EU-funded project <strong>Laser and Ultrasound Co-analyzer for Thyroid Nodules (LUCA)</strong> started in 2016 and over its 5 years of duration, it worked on the development of a new low-cost near-infrared optical device combined with ultrasound that searched to provide doctors with enhanced information required to provide better and more specific results in thyroid nodule screening. The goal of such device was mainly to enable a better diagnosis of this type of cancer because so far, there was no accurate way of determining whether a thyroid tumor as benign or malignant.</p> <p>The LUCA device is a multi-modal platform combining <strong>near infrared light</strong>, <strong>time resolved spectroscopy</strong> (TRS), <strong>diffuse correlation spectroscopy</strong> (DCS), and <strong>ultrasound </strong>in one single device.<br />  </p> <h4>Clinical testing with LUCA</h4> <p>The study recently published in Biomedical Optics Express and authored by members of the consortium reports on several study cases and clinical tests conducted to validate the accuracy and high quality of measurements achieved by the LUCA device.</p> <p>As a first step, the TRS and DCS modules were tested independently using phantom1 tests to validate the performance of both under the different European medical standardization protocols. For the former module, a set of solid phantoms with different absorption and scattering was used to assess the capability of the device to detect absorption and scattering changes, while for the latter, a set of liquid phantoms with different viscosities was used to assess the capability of the device of measuring the movement of the particles in suspension in the liquid phantom. The tests performed did prove to be successful, validating the outstanding performances of both modules.</p> <p>Then, as a second step, the team of experts performed a series of <em>in vivo</em> characterization tests on a model healthy patient. By scanning the thyroid gland, simultaneously with ultrasound imaging, TRS and DCS, several times a day in different days and different weeks, they were to determine the precision of the LUCA device in measuring the hemodynamic parameters related to the thyroid gland.</p> <p>Recently, the device has been moved into the clinical environment and tested on 18 healthy volunteers and 47 patients were diagnosed with thyroid nodules and were scheduled for thyroidectomy. The LUCA device showed potential for identifying the group of nodules as benign or malignant, which were stipulated as unclear cases with the classical ultrasound screening technique. By analyzing the metabolic rate of oxygen consumption and total hemoglobin concentration, the device was able to classify thirteen benign and four malignant nodules with a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 77%.</p> <p><strong>Dr. Mireia Mora</strong> from the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS) in Barcelona, Spain, which is responsible for the clinical application of the tool, under the direction of Prof. Ramon Gomis, highlights the fact that “<em>The need to improve the current standards of thyroid cancer diagnosis has driven us to participate in this multidisciplinary project. We have taken the first steps in preclinical testing, but are sure that with this technology we will be able to avoid unnecessary surgeries and thus improve the quality of life of our patients</em>”.</p> <p><strong>Dr. Turgut Durduran</strong>, coordinator of the LUCA project, group leader at ICFO of the Medical Optics research group, commented that “<em>this project has allowed us to develop a unique optical-ultrasound platform that we are confident that will find a use in the clinical thyroid cancer screening</em>”. Recent advances of diffuse optical techniques have shown that not only these techniques have a tremendous potential in this field, but other fields as well, such as breast, head and neck cancer, abdominal cancer screening and therapy monitoring, cerebrovascular accidents (ictus) or even for COVID19, to name a few. Durduran finally remarks, “<em>We have learnt a lot and are anxious to continue working in this line of research because we believe that this technique could substantially improve the quality of measurements, narrow down diagnosis and helps asses in possible treatments of patients</em>”.<br />  </p> <h4>Diffuse optics to improve medical diagnosis and treatment</h4> <p>Near infrared diffuse optical spectroscopy is an optical method that provides significant complementary information to other medical techniques used for imaging, such as ultrasounds. The LUCA device incorporates two different diffuse optical spectroscopy technologies (TRS and DCS) to improve the screening of thyroid nodules for cancer. These techniques have made it a completely novel device, because it is non-invasive and safe to use, portable, low cost, it probes deep enough into the tissue (&gt;1cm deep) to give substantial information about the surrounding tissue, in this case the thyroid, and it provides a real-time monitoring evaluation together with the ultrasound counterpart.</p> <p>The TRS and DCS modules consist of custom-made components, such as laser heads and off-the-shelf-electronics for detectors and acquisition electronics, which makes them cheaper than any other commercially available TRS and DCS devices.</p> <p>Despite being low cost, the custom developed components enhance performance features allowing the LUCA device to obtain high quality measurements of the tissue’s hemodynamics (blood flow and oxygen at the microvascular level), chemical constitution (water and lipids concentration) as well as anatomy.<br /> _________</p> <p>1 Phantom is a <strong>model </strong>designed specifically to mimic the response of a subject to an external agent or agents and that behave similarly to the real subject in question, e.g. thyroid.</p> <p> </p> </div> </div> <div class="row p-relative"> <div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-md-6"> <div> <i class="rectangle"> <article class="media media-medium-image view-mode-image-rectangle"> <picture> <!--[if IE 9]><video style="display: none;"><![endif]--> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca1.png?itok=SG4_ayP0 1x" media="all and (min-width: 1200px)" type="image/png"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca1.png?itok=SG4_ayP0 1x" media="all and (max-width: 1199px)" type="image/png"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca1.png?itok=SG4_ayP0 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/png"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca1.png?itok=SG4_ayP0 1x" media="all and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/png"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca1.png?itok=SG4_ayP0 1x" media="all and (min-width: 768px)" type="image/png"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca1.png?itok=SG4_ayP0 1x" media="all and (max-width: 767px)" type="image/png"/> <!--[if IE 9]></video><![endif]--> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca1.png?itok=SG4_ayP0" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </picture> </article> </i> </div> </div> <div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-md-6"> <div> <i class="rectangle"> <article class="media media-medium-image view-mode-image-rectangle"> <picture> <!--[if IE 9]><video style="display: none;"><![endif]--> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca%202.png?itok=kcowejMT 1x" media="all and (min-width: 1200px)" type="image/png"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca%202.png?itok=kcowejMT 1x" media="all and (max-width: 1199px)" type="image/png"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca%202.png?itok=kcowejMT 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/png"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca%202.png?itok=kcowejMT 1x" media="all and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/png"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca%202.png?itok=kcowejMT 1x" media="all and (min-width: 768px)" type="image/png"/> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca%202.png?itok=kcowejMT 1x" media="all and (max-width: 767px)" type="image/png"/> <!--[if IE 9]></video><![endif]--> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/rectangle_medium/public/2021-05/luca%202.png?itok=kcowejMT" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </picture> </article> </i> </div> </div> </div> <div class="row p-relative"> <div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-md-12"> <p><em>Description: first lab tests in 2019 of the LUCA device at ICFO research center in Barcelona. Pediatric imaging is especially important in this regard. The significant level of inappropriate use of medical exposures was demonstrated in many studies, including those performed by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) (2009) “Report of a consultation on justification of patient exposures in medical imaging”. In several European countries national audit studies on appropriateness of CT and MRI examinations were performed, with different results, and the ESR is strongly promoting dissemination and use of imaging referral guidelines. </p> <p><a href="https://www.myesr.org/esriguide">ESR iGuide</a>, ESR’s European evidence-based imaging referral guidelines embedded in a Clinical Decision Support (CDS) environment will be used as the standard against which the CT referrals will be audited during the project. Several successful pilot projects using ESR iGuide in Europe and beyond have already demonstrated significant improvements in appropriateness. <br />  </p> <p>Following yesterday’s formal kick-off meeting with the European Commission, the concrete next steps of this project will be: </p> <ul> <li>To carry out a survey among national competent authorities and national radiology societies to enquire about current practices around CT justification, including the use of referral protocols, and whether an audit of justification of CT procedures has been performed in their countries.    </li> <li>To discuss the methodology for CT justification audits with the countries/regions that have expressed interest and to start recruitment of auditors.    </li> </ul> <p><strong>This project is another important milestone for ESR and its collaborative work with other organisations, including its national and subspecialty societies, professional societies of related disciplines, radiation protection regulators, and ministries of health, to promote and enhance compliance with the European Council Directive 2013/59/Euratom – Basic Safety Standards (BSS Directive), and support improvement of justification</strong>. </p> <p>Updates will be available continuously at <a href="http://www.eurosafeimaging.org/eu-just-ct">http://www.eurosafeimaging.org/eu-just-ct</a>  </p> <p> </p> <p><em>This project has received funding from the European Commission
