Vienna, Austria – March 6, 2024 – The European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2024 concluded last week after five days of groundbreaking insights, visionary discussions, and immersive experiences, bringing the congress theme of ‘Next Generation Radiology’ to life. Held from February 28 to March 3 in Vienna, ECR 2024 welcomed 18,861 participants from 127 countries, signalling a remarkablenine percent increase compared to the previous year.Diving into the heart of Next Generation Radiology, ECR 2024 transcended the boundaries of innovation, education, and collaboration in the field of medical imaging.
The congress kicked off with a captivating Opening Ceremony that took a step into the world of science fiction. Room A was filled to the brim with attendees as, for the first time in ECR history, the Opening featured a co-host alongside the Congress President. Ameca, the world’s most advanced robotic humanoid joined ESR President Prof. Carlo Catalano on stage for an incredible spectacle that included energetic dance performances, beautiful animations and the traditional awarding of Honorary Membership and Gold Medals. Together, they also painted a compelling vision of the future of radiology and the pivotal role that AI will place during this transformative era in medical imaging. You can watch the Opening for free here.
The future of radiology was also very much at the heart of this year’s Scientific Programme. The Innovation in Focus programme saw a dynamic series of sessions discussing groundbreaking solutions in radiology, whilst the AI Expo and Theatre and the Cube hosted companies and experts as they showcased cutting-edge technologies in AI, machine learning and interventional radiology. In addition, the bustling industry exhibition, featuring over 230 leading companies, served as a vibrant hub for collaboration, business and social interactions.
Three inspiring plenary lectures took place this year, delivered by Dr. Rick Abramson, Prof. Geoffrey D. Rubin and Dr. Annemiek Snoeckx. These plenary’s adopted a new innovative style in their presentation formats, offering a glimpse of the creative direction major lectures will take at future ECRs.
“As we bid farewell to ECR 2024, we stand at the cusp of a new era in radiology – one defined by innovation, collaboration, and boundless possibilities,” remarked Prof. Catalano. “ECR 2024 has been a testament to the collective vision and determination of the global radiological community to embrace new technology and adapt our practice to improve and empower our role in patient care. I would like to thank everyone who attended and shared their personal visions for next generation radiology at this wonderful meeting. Together, we have developed a collective blueprint for the future of our profession.”
Beyond the scientific discourse, ECR 2024 celebrated diversity and inclusivity, welcoming participants from 127 countries and spanning a spectrum of disciplines and backgrounds. The number of radiographers in attendance surged to more than one thousand with a programme dedicated to their profession. Furthermore, a revival of the connAction programme saw speakers from a huge variety of medical professions engage in multidisciplinary discourse designed to foster cross-pollination of ideas and underscore the collaborative ethos at the heart of modern healthcare.
Looking ahead, the legacy of ECR 2024 will continue to inspire and propel the radiological community forward, paving the way for a future where Next Generation Radiology transforms lives and shapes the course of healthcare.
